Over the weekend of 28 and 29 November 2020, I attended the annual Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) in Langley Park, Perth. Now in its 10th year, the event hosts teams from across Western Australia, as they complete challenges inspired by real life emergency situations.
It’s an action packed weekend, and once again I was asked to photograph the event. It’s something I’ve been doing for ten years now. And I always enjoy the opportunity to put my event photography skills to good use.
MERC is a not-for-profit event that provides world class emergency rescue training and skill building opportunities for volunteer mines rescue teams. Over the course of two days, they compete in a range of realistic scenarios covering all emergency response disciplines; road crash rescue, hazardous material response, vertical rescue, fire fighting, confined space, emergency team readiness and first aid.
As most of you know, I mainly photograph landscapes and the natural world. But I also have quite a bit of experience when it comes to photographing events, mainly through my day job.
I’ve chosen a selection of my favourite photographs from this year’s event. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’re in need of a photographer to capture the highlights of your next event.
